Cloak VPN App for iOSThe Cloak VPN App for iOS is my favorite VPN client on iOS. The pricing is ok, it’s very easy to setup, it just works and it’s available for Mac OS X and iOS (iPhone and iPad) all at once.

The world is changing to ever more mobility and people are used to have internet available everywhere – even free WLAN is quite normal these days. Since those WLANs should not be trusted one needs a simple way to encrypt all traffic and hide it from prying eyes on the local network.

You have to sign up for the service at https://www.getcloak.com/ and install the app on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. If you are not sure if you want to pay for a VPN service, there is a 30-day free trial available, so you can check this out for yourself. Once the app is installed, you sign in to your account and everything is ready to go.

The iOS App

The iOS client can be found in the iTunes store.

Once the app is installed it’s just used to install a security profile on your device. After installation the app just shows your current account usage and allows to reinstall the VPN profiles.

On iOS is not much to configure since the device’s abilities are quite limited. At the moment it is necessary to manually start the VPN each time you want it (and each time you unlock your iPhone/iPad) and the device does not even show a warning when the VPN connection drops in the middle of your work.

The start screen of the iPad app just. Cloak account overview The web browser is used to download and install the VPN settings. After the browser download, the profile needs to be confirmed. The VPN settings show all available Cloak VPNs. When the VPN is enabled by flipping the switch, the tag VPN shows up in the iPads status line.
